EAGE and SBGf are partnering to organize a dedicated two-day workshop on Least Square Migration in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, scheduled for November 27-28, 2018. Information on paper submissions and participation is available soon on both EAGE and SBGf web sites.
Least Squares Migration (LSM) is an imaging technique that has gained attention in recent years for its ability to improve images obtained by traditional migration methods, minimizing the presence of artifacts, mitigating illumination effects and increasing its spatial resolution. LSM is an optimization technique, where the goal is to iteractively minimize a functional. LSM can be based in either pre- or post-stack imaging methods, with functionals defined either in the data or image domains. This host of possibilities makes LSM a flexible methodology for many geopyshical applications.
Unlike Full Waveform Inversion (FWI), LSM is based in the concept of Born modelling and focuses mainly in retrieving information about the reflectivity model, thus avoiding challenges related to estimating the background velocity model. These features of LSM make it very attractive for industrial applications. LSM is quickly becoming the next step in imaging and being regarded as an important step in geophysical data processing.
