From Cradle to the Grave – The Rock Physics “life story” of a Clastic Sediment, and its significance in QI Studies
Short Course Overview:
Present-day rock-physics properties and associated seismic signatures are strongly affected by the geological “life cycle” of sedimentary rocks, from deposition to mechanical compaction, then chemical compaction, and tectonic uplift causing erosion and re-deposition. To fully understand the seismic properties of rocks, we should honour the geologic processes through time.
This will make the rock physics modelling more predictive in an explorational setting, and it can also better constrain the dynamic seismic reservoir characterization from 4-D seismic. In this short course we will briefly demonstrate the link between the various geological processes and rock physics properties, and then show a few case examples where it is important to take into account the combined burial and rock physics modeling.
About the Instructor:
Dr Per Avseth is a co-founder and consulting geophysicist at G&G Resources in Oslo, Norway, and adjunct professor in reservoir geophysics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. Per received his M.Sc. in Applied Petroleum Geosciences from NTNU in 1993, and his Ph.D. in Geophysics from Stanford University, California, in 2000. Per worked as a research geophysicist at Norsk Hydro in Bergen, 2001-2006, as a consultant geophysicist at Odin Petroleum in Bergen, 2006-2012, and as a geophysical advisor at Spring Energy/Tullow Oil in Oslo, 2012-2016. Per’s research interests include applied rock physics and AVO analysis, for quantitative seismic exploration and reservoir characterization. He is a co-author of the book "Quantitative Seismic Intepretation - Applying Rock Physics Tools to Reduce Interpretation Risk" published by Cambridge University Press (2005), and he served as the SEG Honorary Lecturer for Europe in 2009. He is also a course instructor in Rock Physics for EAGE.
