WGE SIC e-mentoring programme

The Women in Geoscience and Engineers EAGE SIC is pleased to launch the Second e-Mentoring programme! The programme is open to all WGE EAGE SIC and EAGE members seeking to engage in a meaningful mentor/mentee relationship. The programme is envisaged to run for six months, starting from March 2018.

The objective of the programme is to give mentors the opportunity to share their knowledge, experience and expertise with the mentees and provide them with feedback.

Through the e-mentoring program the mentees will have the opportunity to gain better understanding of the industry or the academic world and discuss some of the problems they have been facing in their career path.

e-Mentoring - format and commitment
The mentor and mentee should aim to have at least one monthly meeting for the six months duration of the programme. Since WGE SIC members come from all over the world, meetings are expected to be virtual and can be carried out through Skype or Lync, for instance. Mentor and mentee then decide on a mutually agreeable frequency for the meetings and length of time (e.g. 30 minutes bi-weekly or 1 hour once a month).

Mentees are expected to prepare for the meetings by identifying a few topics they would like to discuss with their mentors, so that the meetings can be productive. Mentees are encouraged to send their questions in advance to their mentors if they believe this may help facilitate the discussion. It is a good idea that mentor and mentee start with a brief introduction during the first meeting so that they can get to know each other. Mentoring is also an opportunity for mutual learning.

Mentors can learn from mentees as well!

Application process

The WGE EAGE SIC invites members interested in participating in this programme to complete an application for and return it to EAGE on membership@eage.org by 31 Jan, 2018. Please note, the applications must be members of the EAGE for 2018, as well as members of the WGE EAGE SIC.

The Committee members will match applicants with similar interests. The matched mentor-mentee pair will be contacted by e-mail by March 1st. The number of matches will depend on the number of members that apply to participate in the programme. To ensure that you receive the best match, in the application form please provide as many details as possible.

At the end of each programme, participants are asked to fill in a short questionnaire to provide feedback on their experience. This will enable us to continuously improve our programme based on the feedback we receive.


Results of first e-Mentoring Programme

The First e-Mentoring Program was one of the flagship activities of the EAGE Women in Geosciences and Engineering Special Interest Community (WGE SIC) launched in the summer of 2016, offering EAGE members with a true mentoring experience. Over 40 EAGE male and female members participated in the first e-mentoring program.

After this first edition, feedback provided by half of the participants gave the WGE committee a good insight into the initiative: for 83% of them, the e-mentoring was rated as meeting or exceeding expectations!
